simply do not have one. This can cost you a lot of money in energy

DAMAGED CROWN
The crown is the cement that is poured on top of you chimney to hold it
together. It also protects your chimney from water incursion. If the
crown is cracked or worn, water can go down through the chimney and
into the structure of the home causing water damage and mold
infestation. The water also deteriorates the chimney structure which
can lead to collapse.
CREOSOTE BUILDUP
Excess creosote is extremely dangerous. See chimney fire. Make sure
you have the chimney cleaned and inspected as some people go years
and years without a proper cleaning.
DAMAGED LINER
A cracked or damaged liner is dangerous as it can allow poisonous
carbon monoxide gas to leak into the house. Water can also leak
through and create water damage and mold infestation. If creosote
builds up in the cracks or gaps a chimney fire becomes even more
dangerous as it now has extra fuel and a path into your home. You now
have the possibility of a major chimney fire on your hands and the loss
of your home or worse.
DAMAGED SMOKE CHAMBER AND FIREBOX
Gaps in the smoke chamber as well as the lintel and facing can allow
heat, sparks and flames into the wall. The heat causes pyrolization (the
wood changes to charcoal) of the wood, which can then lead to a major
fire. Those same gaps also allow dangerous carbon monoxide to seep
into the living space of the home. The firebox itself takes the brunt of
the high temperatures of your fires. This tends to deteriorate the
firebrick as well as the mortar joints. Water seepage also deteriorates
the firebox. This water/heat deterioration leads to major stability
problems. Get it checked.
